Birthday Fun!

Hello Everyone!

My apologies for being absent for an entire week!  I was at my company's National Sales Conference from Monday-Thursday, so I was not able to set aside any time to blog!  No worries, I am back at it and will resume normal posts.

I celebrated my 24th birthday this past Saturday with friends and family at our Annual Easter Eve party.  I had and absolute blast and would love to share some highlights from our shindig.
  • Egg Toss - My friend and I were doing so well....until the egg broke in my hands and ruined my ensemble...oh well!
  • Adult Easter Egg Hunt - Unfortunately I did not get to participate in it this year, but we hide camouflage eggs in our backyard and all the adults try their best to find them.  Is there a prize you ask?  Why yes, there is!  For each egg you find, you are rewarded with a Jello Shot.
  • Dance Party - Two years back, my neighbor came over and brought his entire DJ system and our garage turned into one of the biggest dance parties I have ever witnessed.  This year he came before the party started and set up his equipment and needless to say we had a whale of a time!
Aside from those fun little activities it was great to spend time with all of my favorite people....cocktails included!

I thought it would be fun to share with you the lovely little treats my friends and family surprised me with for my birthday:

Carrot Cake Birthday Cupcakes...YUM :)

Orange "You?!?!" - Birthday gifts from the familia

All the fun stuff!

I think this solidifies my "Wino"status.

Firefighter Gnome for my Firefighter Jonny :))))) - Thanks Mom!

Beautiful Jewels
Tiffany's Onyx Drop Earrings - From the lovely, Jonny!
Alex and Ani "J" Bangle - Thanks, Laurbell
Germanium Necklace - Jonny's Mother!

Flowers from Jonny's familia and Laurbell!

To say it was an amazing birthday would be an understatement.  Hope you all enjoyed a little peak at one of my personal fav's in the holiday department.

Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurant Review

Hello Everyone!
Tomorrow is my 24th birthday, but since it is my family's annual Easter Eve party (blog post to come on this!) I will be going out to dinner on my “Birthday Eve”.  The restaurant I have chosen to celebrate at is Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurant.  I like to call it the "Cracker Barrel for Adults" because they sell super cute wine EVERYTHING in the front of the store, similar to how Cracker Barrel sells country bumpkin-y merchandise at their locations.  Aside from shopping, you can get a nice pre-dinner buzz on by participating in a wine tasting or two or three... Once you get your table, (takes forever since they do not take reservations, so drink up!) you can check out their menu which ranges from steak and seafood to burgers.  I have had both ends of the spectrum and both are delicious.  Not only do they have great variety, but they are very accommodating of specific dietary needs (i.e. gluten free, dairy free, etc.).  An additional bonus feature of the menu is each dish has a wine paired with it that goes best with your meal.  Did I mention their dessert is to die for?  Cheese cake and crème brûlée, FTW!  All in all, Cooper’s Hawk is a great dining experience for date night, girl’s night, families, birthday, anniversary or really any other reason to drink really yummy wine and enjoy scrumptious food!
Below, I have gone into a bit more detail about some of my favorite parts of Cooper’s Hawk experience:

Sew Cute: Envelope Makeup Bag Tutorial

Hello Everyone!
I have always had a desire to learn how to sew, and finally did something about it a few years ago. I took a sewing class over Spring Break downtown at The Needle Shop. The class I took was Sewing 101 and we learned the basics and made a pillow with a zipper to boot! Taking this class really inspired me, so I asked for a sewing machine for my 21st birthday (not too wholesome...) and my wish was granted! I was so excited to have a machine and went out and bought a ton of fabric, buttons and tools, ready to start a sweatshop out of my house. Well as much as I wanted this to happen, I did not have much time to set aside for projects and eventually forgot about sewing all together.
After a year or two of my machine collecting dust, my mom suggested we take a class since she was getting the sewing bug. We took a class at Joann Fabric and Craft Store and I got the basics down once again. Even after this second class I was not putting time aside to work on anything. The last time I used my machine was on Valentine's Day to fix Jonny's beloved plaid pajama pants (BTW Jonny is my totally awesome boyfriend/blog editor....you'll meet him soon). Lets just say thank god he loves me beyond my sewing skills, as the pants turned out absolutely silly looking. I am not one who likes to fail at anything, so now that I have finally started my blog, I thought what a better way to amp up my creativity and DIY skills than force myself to do blog posts on projects I want to get done. I hope it keeps me accountable and helps inspire you to put some time aside for hobbies you enjoy, but never commit 100% to.
Today's project is an Envelope Makeup Bag using some cutesy cupcake fabric that I bought eons ago at the peak of my wannabe sewing phase. I chose the envelope bag because it is pretty basic, but also looks really pleasing. You do not have to use this bag for makeup, it can be used as a clutch, too. If all goes well today, I may go find some more "clutch appropriate" fabric and make a handbag or two. (any requests?!) I am going to stop typing now and get to work, so I hope you enjoy my first sewing tutorial.
Envelope Makeup Bag
What you need:
·         Fabric
·         Lining
·         Paper for pattern
·         Thread
·         Pins
·         Velcro
·         Button
·         Ruler
Step 1: Pattern
·         Create an envelope template on a piece of paper
o   Envelope top - 10" wide at the bottom
§  Cut 1 piece of fabric for envelope top
§  Cut 1 piece of lining for envelope top
o   Bag body - 10" across at the top and taper out 1" on each side, so bottom is 12"
§  Cut 2 pieces of fabric for each side of the body
§  Cut 2 pieces of lining for each side of the body

Step 2: Lining
·         Attach the lining to fabric
o   My lining was an iron on, but if yours requires another method make sure to apply before sewing bag together
Step 3: Machine Time!
·         Take both pieces of fabric and place them “wrong side” together.  (side of fabric not meant to be seen)
·         Pin the bottom edge together and sew
·         Once edge is sewn, sew in envelope top to the inside of one side of the bag
·         Sew up both side edges of the bag
Step 4: Finishing Touches
·       Now that bag is sewn together, but still inside out, cut any excess fabric along the seam
·       Flip the bag to the right side out making sure to push the edges out to make clean
·       Add Velcro to the closure and hot glue on a button of your choice
·       Enjoy!
One tip I would recommend that I neglected to do would be to HEM YOUR FABRIC SO IT HAS CLEAN EDGING!!!  Aside from that little issue, I think this bag turned out pretty well for my first sewing project in a few years.  My skills have a long way to go before I will be happy with my work, but practice makes perfect!  I encourage you to do something you love even if you are not an expert.  You will never succeed if you do not try!
Feel free to try out this tutorial, and I promise as I get better at sewing, so will my tutorials ;)

FitBit Flex Review

Hello Everyone!
With tons of activity trackers on the market, I wanted to provide an in depth review of the FitBit Flex for today’s post.  I mentioned yesterday that I had worked in Corporate Fitness and am a Certified Personal Trainer, but it was not until my current job that I jumped on the FitBit bandwagon.  I receive points through a work incentive program for taking 10,000 steps a day.  Many different pedometers and activity trackers are compatible with the program and because of this I did some research and decided on the FitBit Flex.  Here’s why!
What the Flex tracks:
·         Steps taken
·         Distance traveled
·         Calories burned
·         Active minutes
·         Hours slept
·         Quality of sleep
All of the above are tracked on Fitbit.com which you can access on the web or via their mobile app.  As you can see in the photos below, FitBit does a great job at showing your individual stats in a format that is aesthetically pleasing and easy to comprehend.

Fitbit.com Dashboard view

I mentioned before that my daily goal is 10,000 steps which is the minimum amount needed for me to receive points, but you can customize your goal to best fit your needs: steps, calories or distance.  During the day if you cannot access the web or mobile app, you can double tap your Flex band and it will show a series of dots.  Each dot represents 20% of your goal completed.  Once you have achieved your goal, the FitBit has a little party on your wrist and vibrates for a few seconds signifying that you are indeed amazing and a “goal” getter!

Sleep Tracker Snapshot
Another fun feature of the Flex is the sleep tracker.  Some people get a bit freaked out by this and scream, “Big Brother!”  No need to worry, since this feature is completely voluntary.  In the evening, or whenever you plan to go to sleep, you tap the band a few times and it will go into sleep mode.  When your Flex is in sleep mode, tapping it will show two dots on the ends of the display, opposed to a row of dots showing your progress (as mentioned above).  While in sleep mode the Flex tracks how long and how well you slept along with how many times you were awake during the night.  You can also use the Flex as a silent alarm to wake you up without bothering your partner!  When you wake up simply tap the band just as you did before bed to remove from sleep mode.  This alerts the tracker to upload how efficient your sleep was, exactly when you awoke and if you were restless throughout your slumber.
My Flex
Some other neat features to the FitBit Flex are:
·         Waterproof
·         8 color options in Small/Large sizes
·         Battery life = 5 days
·         Manual food, weight and activity tracking
·         Compete against other FitBit users
·         Message and cheer on friends
Hope you all enjoyed this review of the FitBit Flex!  I should also mention that FitBit has partnered with designer Tory Burch and any day now will be releasing stylish bracelets and pendants to hold your Flex.  I promise to update immediately when they are available!  A few coworkers and I are praying for a silver band, so we can get our steps over the weekend, too.  I tend not to always wear my Flex on weekends as it is a bit too sporty for weekend attire, so this new band will be a HOT commodity :)
Purchase a FitBit Flex: www.fitbit.com/store $99.95
